India's Aerospace Moment: From Buyer to Manufacturing Powerhouse

While passengers see aircraft in the sky, India’s real aviation revolution may be taking place on factory floors, engineering centers, and supply chain networks across the country.

For decades, India was known as one of the world’s largest aviation markets but not as a major aerospace manufacturing nation. Airlines purchased aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, defense forces relied heavily on imports, and a significant portion of maintenance and component manufacturing occurred outside the country. 

That reality is beginning to change. 

Today, India stands at the threshold of what could become its most significant aerospace transformation since independence. Driven by rising defense requirements, booming commercial aviation demand, government initiatives, and private-sector participation, the country is gradually building the foundations of a modern aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The question is no longer whether aerospace manufacturing will grow in India, but how far and how fast the sector can evolve over the next two decades.  

A Historic Shift Underway

India’s aerospace industry is undergoing a fundamental transition from being primarily an importer and operator of aircraft to becoming a producer of aircraft components, assemblies, and increasingly, complete aviation platforms. 

The most powerful symbol of this change is the Airbus-Tata C295 program. In 2024, Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus inaugurated India’s first private-sector aircraft Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara. Under the program, 56 C295 military transport aircraft are being delivered to the Indian Air Force, with 40 aircraft being manufactured and assembled in India.  

The significance of this development goes far beyond a single aircraft program. Airbus has described the initiative as the first time its complete C295 production system has been established outside its traditional manufacturing locations. The project includes component manufacturing, sub-assembly work, major component integration, final assembly, testing, and delivery, creating an entirely new aerospace ecosystem within India.  

In June 2026, the first India-assembled C295 successfully completed its maiden test flight, marking the first time a private Indian company had assembled a complete military transport aircraft in the country.  

The Rise of Tata Aerospace

If there is one company emerging as the centerpiece of India’s aerospace ambitions, it is the Tata Group. 

Over the last decade, Tata has quietly built capabilities across defense systems, aerostructures, aerospace engineering, unmanned systems, and aircraft assembly. The C295 program has brought together manufacturing activities across Vadodara, Hyderabad, Nagpur, and Bengaluru, creating a network of suppliers, engineers, technicians, and aerospace specialists.  

What makes this evolution particularly important is that it shifts aerospace manufacturing beyond traditional public-sector entities and introduces private-sector scale, efficiency, and investment into the industry. 

For the first time, India can realistically envision a future where private industry plays a major role in aircraft production and aerospace exports.

Commercial Aviation Creates an Unprecedented Opportunity

India’s rapidly expanding airline sector provides a powerful foundation for aerospace manufacturing growth. 

The country is expected to remain one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets for decades. Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, and Akasa Air have collectively placed orders for hundreds of aircraft, with future demand expected to run into the thousands. 

Every aircraft delivered generates demand for: 

  • Structural components 
  • Landing gear systems 
  • Cabin interiors 
  • Wiring harnesses 
  • Composite materials 
  • Avionics equipment 
  • Maintenance services 
  • Engineering support 

Even if India does not immediately produce large commercial airliners, it can still capture significant value by becoming an integral part of the global aerospace supply chain. 

This mirrors the strategy followed by several successful manufacturing nations that first became major suppliers before developing indigenous aircraft capabilities. 

The Hidden Giant: MRO

While aircraft manufacturing receives most of the headlines, Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) may ultimately become an equally important pillar of India’s aerospace sector. 

Historically, Indian airlines have sent significant maintenance work to facilities in Singapore, Dubai, Malaysia, and Europe. As India’s commercial fleet expands, keeping this work within the country offers substantial economic benefits. 

Recognizing this opportunity, several states and airport developers are positioning themselves as future MRO hubs. Uttar Pradesh has specifically identified Noida International Airport as a potential cargo and MRO center, while the airport’s development plans include aviation infrastructure intended to support long-term aerospace growth.  

A strong domestic MRO industry would reduce costs for airlines, create high-skilled employment, attract aviation suppliers, and establish India as a service center for airlines across South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Emerging Aerospace Corridors

Aerospace manufacturing in India is increasingly becoming concentrated within specialized regional clusters. 

Bengaluru 

Often called India’s aerospace capital, Bengaluru hosts major activities related to aerospace engineering, defense, research, and space technology. 

Hyderabad 

The city has emerged as a major center for aerospace manufacturing, missile systems, defense electronics, and advanced engineering. 

Vadodara 

The Airbus-Tata C295 assembly facility has positioned Vadodara as one of India’s newest aviation manufacturing centers.  

Nagpur 

Nagpur is developing as an aircraft maintenance and aerospace logistics center. 

Noida-Jewar Corridor 

With cargo facilities, aviation logistics investments, MRO ambitions, and industrial development plans, the region around Noida International Airport could become a major aerospace cluster during the next decade.  

Together, these hubs are laying the foundations for a distributed national aerospace ecosystem rather than concentrating activities in a single city

The Challenges Ahead

Despite the progress, significant gaps remain. 

The biggest challenge is aircraft engines. Modern aerospace manufacturing is dominated by a small number of engine manufacturers, and India currently lacks equivalent capabilities. Even aircraft assembled in India continue to rely on imported propulsion systems and several critical technologies.  

A second challenge is the absence of an indigenous commercial aircraft program capable of competing globally with Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, or COMAC. 

Third, India still needs a much larger network of specialized suppliers capable of producing high-precision aerospace components at global quality standards and volumes. 

Building these capabilities will require sustained investment, technology transfer, research and development, workforce training, and long-term policy stability. 

The Road to 2040

ndia’s aerospace journey can be viewed in three phases. 

Phase 1: Import and Assembly Era (1950-2020) 
India largely imported aircraft while maintaining limited domestic manufacturing capability. 

Phase 2: Industrial Ecosystem Era (2020-2035) 
The current phase is characterized by aircraft assembly, global partnerships, supplier development, aerospace corridors, and MRO expansion.  

Phase 3: Aerospace Export Era (2035-2050) 
If current efforts succeed, India could emerge as a major aerospace exporter, advanced manufacturing center, and aviation technology hub. 

India's aerospace story

India’s aerospace story is no longer merely about purchasing aircraft. It is increasingly about designing, manufacturing, assembling, maintaining, and supporting them. 

The Airbus-Tata C295 program, emerging aerospace corridors, expanding MRO capabilities, and the explosive growth of India’s aviation market collectively signal the beginning of a structural transformation.  

India may not produce a Boeing or Airbus competitor tomorrow. But it does not need to. 

The bigger opportunity is to become for aerospace what India became for automobiles: a globally competitive manufacturing powerhouse integrated into international supply chains. 

If the current momentum continues, the next decade could be remembered as the period when India stopped being merely one of the world’s largest aviation markets and started becoming one of its most important aerospace manufacturing nations.
